The 40th anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope cross-country run to raise money for cancer research is being commemorated by Adidas.

The sportswear giant is releasing a replica of the Adidas Orion running shoe worn by Fox, the B.C. native who became a national hero as he attempted to run across Canada in 1980 before he died from cancer nine months in 1981 at age 22.

The blue sneaker ($130), along with a T-shirt showing Fox running and the words 'Terry Fox 80'($40), will go on sale Wednesday in Canada only with 100% of net proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Back in the day, Fox, whose right leg was amputated in 1977 but he ran with the use of an artificial leg, wrote to Adidas asking for help in outfitting him and was sent 26 pairs of Orion shoes for his run.

In response to the new Adidas campaign, the Terry Fox Foundation released the letter he wrote to the athletic company in 1979.

"The night before my amputation, my former basketball coach brought me a magazine with an article on an amputee who ran in the New York Marathon." wrote Fox.

"It was then I decided to meet this new challenge head on and not only overcome my disability, but conquer it in such a way that I could never look back and say it disabled me."

The Terry Fox Foundation lauded the company's campaign, tweeting, "Adidas has been a true friend to Terry and his legacy for over 40 years."
